Write-up taken from the IRRI's Rice Almanac (2013):

The Dominican Republic occupies an area of 48,670 km2, the major part of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, with Haiti occupying the smaller, western part of the island. The Dominican Republic had a population of 10 million in 2011, and about 10% of the workforce is engaged in agriculture, which makes up 6% of GDP. It is a tropical country with extensive fertile areas lying between mountain ranges; about 17% is arable land.
