The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) occupies the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, with a population of 24.45 million (2011) in an area of 120,540 km2, bordering China and the Republic of Korea. Much of the country is mountainous, with rice, the main agricultural crop, and other crops being grown on plains. Arable land is 22% (2009) of the total. Agriculture makes up 21% of GDP, occupying a third of the workforce.
