Ecuador, on the tropical Pacific coast of South America, is a small country; the total land area is only 256,370 km2, extending from coastal plains where most of the population lives and where cash crops, including rice, are grown, to mountainous regions in which agriculture is more at a subsistence level.  The population was 14.7 million in 2011, with 28.7% of the workforce employed in agriculture. Arable land constitutes 4.8% of the land area and agriculture accounted for 7.5% of GDP in 2010.
