The Russian Federation in northern Asia is the world’s largest country, occupying an area of 17 million km2, from Europe in the west to the North Pacific Ocean in the east. The climate varies from arctic to subtropical and the terrain from mountainous to desert. Overall, 8% of the population of 142.8 million (2011) is engaged in agriculture, which forms 4.3% of GDP. Arable land is 7.4% of the land area.
